Trauma informed supervision for teachers in a complex setting

How regular onsite supervision gave teachers working with young people with complex needs a trusted space to debrief.

The challenge

Teachers working with young people with complex needs in a high security setting were finding it hard to access face to face counselling. The demands of the environment, and the pressure that came with it, made regular support all the more important.

Our approach

Our Relationship Manager and Clinical team met with representatives across the organisation to understand the challenges. Together, we agreed that a tailored supervision programme would best meet the teachers’ needs.

A clinician visits onsite twice a term to run trauma informed supervision sessions. Teachers have dedicated time to debrief, access independent professional support, and build strategies for their psychological safety at work. Having the same clinician throughout has built trust and a deep understanding of the setting.

The impact

Two years on, teachers continue to use the supervision, value it highly and have asked for it to continue. The clinician’s ongoing relationship with the teachers also means emerging needs are picked up early, helping shape support into the future.
