Bringing counselling onsite for hospital staff working around the clock

How weekly onsite sessions and a simpler way to book helped hospital staff access support, many for the first time.

The challenge

Hospital staff work in a high stress environment, managing ongoing disruption, staff shortages and patients with complex needs. Long hours and shift work made it hard for staff to find time to attend counselling, even when they needed it.

Our approach

Drawing on our experience in the health sector, we worked with hospital representatives to shape the approach. We recommended weekly scheduled onsite counselling, delivered by a clinician with extensive experience supporting hospital staff.

The clinician tailored their approach to the realities of healthcare work, supporting staff with trauma and burnout and encouraging self care. To make booking easier for time poor staff, we introduced a confidential QR code booking system.

The impact

The onsite service was well used, helped by the simple booking process and by staff and managers sharing their positive experiences with colleagues. For some, it was the first time they had accessed mental health support.

The service has since been extended across all hospitals in the district, with booking data and our own research continuing to shape the support.
